Miami itself acts like a character because it provides such a significant contribution to the television series. Writers negatively glamorize Miami’s vibrant and diverse culture and lifestyle through its abundant portrayal of sex, drugs, and alcohol. However, this glamorization promotes Miami as a setting of violence because this location is also familiar with high amounts of criminal activity, i.e. drug cartels, gang activity, sex trafficking, etc. Hierarchies within the criminal social ladder are established and explored throughout the show as new characters are introduced in Miami. Furthermore, writers use the fact that Miami is a port city to bring in characters that Weston has met in in the past, allowing for new evil and friendly characters to come and go as they please. For example in the episode "Rough Seas", Micheal comes into contact with Bulgarian mobsters, Russian snipers, and pirates. While it isn't fair to display Miami in this light, it does offer convenient plot twists, and character introductions.
